We’re back with another Valerie & Chad episode to catch up after a busy summer, and even though these episodes are on the chiller side, our trusted co-hosts got plenty of hot spice for your figurative ear lattes. They cover a range of topics such as Chad discovering deferred payment services, speculate on how people can afford to do so much cool stuff, why phones are killing dance floors everywhere, the fading relevance of the nightclub business model, Valerie’s good vibes from Portola Festival, the fatigue of listening to lazy derivative music works, and celebrating the age of non-white headliners. Plus they answer a few community mailbag questions!

This week on All This Noise we welcome one of our international friends, as Singapore-based producer MYRNE stops by to catch up for the first time in the US since pre-pandemic times. He’s released fantastic melodic records on labels ranging from majors to indies and written songs with everyone from the likes of RL Grime to Jai Wolf, who he recently joined as support for his US tour.
MYRNE reminisces about meeting Valerie in Shanghai as a “rising Asian artist” and crashing on Chad’s couch in 2017, the musical origins of his first name, the glory days of SoundCloud collectives, getting discovered by Mad Decent, the creative process collaborating with Jai Wolf, the difficulties of living through lockdown restrictions in Asia, and explaining the double-barrel mindset of the producer / DJ.

The noise keeps coming this week with one of our good homies, all-around chiller and gifted producer, Devault. He’s currently been releasing some of his most inspired music to date, working with the likes of Zhu, DJ Snake, and RL Grime to boot.
We break the ice with Devault by recounting his world-changing entry into the scene with Holy Ship!, how his brother’s controller and the game DJ Hero created his love for electronic music, the process of convincing his parents that music was his career calling, the influence of DJ AM, going back to his musical roots to create his best music yet, the art of turning a live show into a transformative theatrical experience, getting some sauce from guys like Zhu & Snake, plus, how he played college lacrosse at Arizona State. We’ve got more noise for you this week with Chet Porter, one of our top 3 Canadians of all time, dropping in to share some insights and some chuckles ahead of the release of his new album "EYES" and his headline show in Los Angeles. Also, if you’re a fan of Owl City, then you’re definitely in good company here.
Chet joins us to discuss painful fan interactions on Runyon Canyon, getting signed to a label with his high school Pop-punk band, learning how to produce on his dad’s Acer laptop, the helpful influence of Ryan Hemsworth, being super uncomfortable while playing EDC, the caution young artists should exercise when signing with a label, if albums have the same impact in the culture in 2023, the ridiculous saga of getting banned from Twitter while impersonating a certain president (guess which one), and much much more!

The gang is back with a very special guest this week on All This Noise with none other than Jauz, longtime homie and figure in the US dance music world, stopping by. This year he’s been working on multiple albums, a nationwide tour, and raising a human child, all topics included in this entertaining convo.
We chop it up with Jauz about the backstory of his San Holo collab during San’s early years, how ICON Collective helped him find his career calling, the insane origin story of his breakthrough record “Feel The Volume,” the story of how he met his future wife at EDC while Excision was playing his song, why the term “Bass House” makes his skin crawl, the difficulty in having a sound that doesn’t adhere to one genre, reimagining his 2018 album “The Wise and The Wicked” as 2 new albums, a missed opportunity to form a Drum and Bass supergroup with Zeds Dead, and so much more!

Coming back in hot with back-to-back Valerie & Chad episodes of All This Noise, cause there was just so much to discuss in the world of festivals and dance music over Labor Day weekend. Our inside source Valerie Lee is back from Burning Man with the dried mud and self-reliance to prove it!
They dive in deep with the thoughts including why Valerie thinks this was one of her best Burn’s yet, how the experience gets misconstrued by the default world, extended adolescence and the need for adult play, why nostalgia can be troubling, the Fyre Fest-ification of media coverage, Billy McFarland’s Fyre reboot, Electric Zoo’s chaotic weekend, why consumers expect so much from music festivals now, and wondering whether we’re past the apex of festival culture in America.

010. VALERIE & CHAD - can we separate artists from their art in 2023?
Thursday Sep 07, 2023
Thursday Sep 07, 2023
All This Noise is back again this week with another Valerie & Chad only episode, with special guest: Sleep Deprivation! Our fearless hosts jump into respective recaps of their exciting weeks before jumping into an extensive discussion about if we are truly capable of separating artists from their art in 2023.
Included in this discussion is the lukewarm nature of EDM beef, why dance music figures are still not seen as serious as those in other genres, which DJ’s laid the groundwork for being a vocal personality, if an artist’s voice has more value than their music these days, the case for John Summit being a solid face for the US scene, lowering our expectations of DJ’s as role models, and the extremely subjective nature of having a “platform.”

Don’t look now, but Valerie & Chad are wearing the same shirt in different colors! It's all good though cause most of you are audio only anyways (we’re also on YouTube). They’re back this week with a highly-entertaining and stimulating conversation with Saka, a multicultural dude making some unique dubstep and left-of-center bass music who has recently toured with titans of the scene such as Zeds Dead, Slander, and Subtronics.
We waste no time in jumping into a wide-ranging convo (3:15), including why young people are trying too hard these days, growing up as an American expat in Hong Kong, how Porter Robinson introduced a generation of Asian Americans to EDM, the Asian family dichotomy of stability and the quest for one’s dreams, why he left Silicon Valley for the bass music world, how Skrillex’s new music was disruptive, the dilemma of not compromising your art in a mainstream setting, and why kids watching anime in 2023 have it so good.
